The Wright Brothers
National Memorial is the site of the world's first successful
powered airplane flight by Wilbur and Orville Wright on
December 17, 1903
The park incorporates
the historic Kill Devil Hill, the largest of the four sand
hills present on the site at the time of the Wright brothers
experiments of 1900-1903 which is the site of the Wright
Brothers Monument.
The Visitor Center houses exhibits and artifact that tells the story
of the Wright brothers from childhood to the first flight. The exhibits
are available year round and include reproductions the 1902 glider and
the 1903 Flyer. A two-minute stroll from the visitor center is the Wright
1903 camp buildings and granite markers, which designate the take-off
spot of the first flight and lengths of the four successful powered flights.
Hours
of Admission:
Open daily 9 am-5 pm,
Memorial Day-Labor Day 9 am-6 pm.
Closed Dec. 25th.
Directions:
The park is located on the Outer Banks of North Carolina in the town
of
Kill Devil Hills, NC. The visitor center is on US 158. From Norfolk,
VA
take 168 east to 158 east to Kill Devil Hills. From the Western part
of the state off I-95 take 64 east to 158 to Kill Devil Hills.
Admission Fee. $3 per person/children under 16 Free. NPS Passes are honored.
